Don’t just vote. Educate yourself first or don’t vote.

Yesterday we had our primary and local elections in South Dakota. Why does voting for your local dog catcher matter? You’re seeing why right now. Every single person in every position plays a role. It’s critical to vote. I won’t go so far as to say that if you didn’t vote you can’t complain. I think that’s a stupid statement but there’s a hint of validity there. We’ve seen, and I’ve said, that silence is as bad as committing the act. Well, don’t be silent.

All of that said, don’t go in with an uneducated vote. Do NOT educate yourself with the media either. I don’t care if you watch Fox News or CNN or Al Jazeera… they all have a bias. Educate yourself by looking at how they’ve voted in the past. Sites like ballotpedia.org will give you tons of information on even local reps. Can’t find that information or they’re new? Send them an email. Call them. Attend a coffee session they’re putting on.

You may not agree with everything they stand for but odds are you’ve got your list of non-negotiable issues and others that you can compromise on. If you don’t, take some time to think about it. If you’re a parent, it’s not just you that you’re voting for. It’s your kids and the world that they’re going to grow up in, attend school, graduate, get married, etc. It’s important. It’s critical. It drives change forward.

If you haven’t done that research for yourself, though, it’s a lost vote. It’s a dangerous vote. You’re voting for who your spouse, or parent, or friend, or worse the media, wants you to vote for. November will be here before you know it. Start doing your research now. Don’t wait or it’ll be too late. Start now. Make sure you vote, but please make it an educated vote.
